A Prussian P8
locomotive 230.516 waits to depart Cluj at the head of scheduled passenger train to Ciucea in October 1998 - the locomotive was on a test run having just emerged from the works. The Romanians have an active programme of restoring old steam locomotives to form the basis of a nostalgic fleet used for special events and chartered trains for enthusiasts. |

Rack locomotive 40.001 - one of 7 constructed in 1908 for the Caransebes to Subcetate Railway. They were used on the steeply graded rack section over the Portile de Fier Pass until 1978.
At least 6 of these locomotives are still in existence, 4 at Subcetate, 1 at Sibiu Museum and this one, photographed in 1998 at Petrosani |
