>General Information

Location

Lunca Ilvei is a peaceful mountain village in the Bârgãu region of northern Transylvania. Most traffic is horse drawn and there is little motor traffic. There is a minor road from Ilva Mica in the Somes Valley and a railway station on the spectacular railway line between Ilva Mica and Vatra Dornei.

The surrounding land is a mixture of alpine pasture and forest, ideal for horse riding. Transhumance is practiced by shepherds who spend each summer in high pastures in a way unchanged for generations.Wildlife including deer and large birds of prey are often seen. To the north the Rodna mountains reach over 2000 metres. Eastward lie the famous "painted monasteries" and the spa town of Vatra Dornei, in the Bucovina region. Southwards is the "Borgo Pass" of Dracula fame!
Horses and equipment

Native Romanian breeds are used, principally the strong and lively Hutsul mountain ponies. A Lipizzaner and an Irish Draught horse are also present at the stables. Australian saddles combining comfort with a secure seat are used.

Accommodation

Please refer to accommodation section for homestays in Lunca Ilvei.

Accommodation during your riding programme will be organised by Julian in hotels and homestays en route - all with hot and cold running water and inside bathrooms. Food is traditional Romanian fayre and generally organic. Vegetarian and other diets can be catered for given sufficient notice.

Tour Information

The daily distance is around 20 - 25 km, and is ridden at a mixture of walking and trotting with some cantering where terrain permits. Baggage is ususally transported by a horse-drawn vehicle (with seats for non-riders), which is able to use routes not open to motor vehicles. The baggage cart will also carry food for the midday meal.

Groups will not usually exceed 6 people. Cater principally for competent riders able to cope with hilly terrain. Instruction can be given with advance notice. Some horses are suitable for beginners and children.

Short breaks

Available most weekends, and are very flexible. SEE SPECIALS: Caleche Trips, Castle Dracula, Sheepfolds etc
